Camp Kesem

This summer I volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Kesem. After being offered a position, I reported to camp on July 5th where I spent five days solely dedicating myself to the campers whose parents have or had cancer. This gave me some experience working with the same population I will work with as a pediatric nurse. By leading the children in scheduled activities throughout the week, I was able to build a relationship with them while taking their minds off the struggles they inevitably face at home due to their circumstances.
I volunteered as a counselor at Camp Kesem in order to gain experience working with the pediatric population, receive a better understanding of how to interact with them, and learn how to handle stressful situations when placed in a position of leadership. I also learned new camp activities and skills which I was able to apply to my summer job.

Through my work as a counselor at Camp Kesem, I was able to enhance my leadership skills while also providing a fun week for the campers undergoing difficult situations at home. I gained skills and experience which helped me become a better counselor at the health and fitness camp I worked at for the remainder of the summer. Additionally, I reconfirmed my belief that I want to work with the pediatric population and built many professional relationships, including a few with nurses, which I can carry with me as I further by educational career. Camp Kesem taught me many leadership skills I can use when faced with an unfamiliar situation and also helped me develop skills I already had when it comes to communicating with others and leading activities.
