College Student Volunteers Week of Time to Children Whose Parents Have/Had Cancer
Southern Utah University student volunteers at Camp Kesem over the summer. Camp Kesem, a nationally recognized organization, provides a week long camp free of charge to children whose parent(s) have/had cancer in order to allievate stresses at home.
CEDAR CITY, Utah- September 12, 2016- During the Summer of 2016, Southern Utah University student Staci Thompson volunteered a week of her time from July 5th-9th to the chlildren of Camp Kesem. She left her Las Vegas home at 2:30am on the morning of July 5th in order to provide the children of Southern Utah with a week full of unforgettable memories. Approximately 150 children attended camp, but with the help of two other counselors, Staci Thompson was only in charge of the health, safety, and happiness of eight girls ranging from the ages of ten to twelve. The eleven young women stayed in a cabin in Tooele, Utah for the entire week spending every minute of every day together.
All campers in attendance were provided the entire week free of charge thanks to each counselor fundraising $500 in donations. Along with attending camp for free, each child has a parent who either had or is currently battling cancer which is why Staci Thompson and other students from Southern Utah University volunteered their time to provide a week of life long memories. Prior to attending camp, there were many meetings and online trainings which were also completed without monetary compensation.
Staci Thompson is currently a pre-nursing student at Southern Utah University. She hopes to specialize in pediatrics which is why she chose to work with this population as part of her EDGE Project. The EDGE Program is a graduation requirement for all students graduating from SUU. It gives them an "edge" over others applying to grad schools and jobs by allowing them to create, execute, and reflect on an entire project over a long period of time. Although the initial reason Staci Thompson volunteered for Camp Kesem was because she needed a project for school, she instantly fell in love with the organization and everyone she worked with. Now that her project is over, she hopes to continue working with Camp Kesem for years to come and potentially become more involved with the organization.
